Fear and Faith… two sides of the same coin.

Growing up in church, we have always been taught to have faith; the just shall live by faith; if you have mustard seed faith; contend for the faith; the trying of your faith; and more faith. Faith is the cornerstone of Christianity. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Webster 2b says, “(1) : firm belief in something for which there is no proof (2) : complete trust”. The other side of faith is fear. Fear is a tormenter; without faith it’s impossible to please the Lord; and perfect love drives out all fear. Webster 1a says, “an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger”. Two sides of the same coin…

My question is… what happens when life happens and you are afraid? Does that make you any less of a Christian because you are scared? Does that make you any less faithful because you have fear?

I went to the doctor’s office and they wanted to run some tests, no problem. They wanted to draw blood in order to run the tests, problem. The problem is that I don’t like needles. I have a history of problems with the process of drawing blood. The person may miss the vein or, I’ve had to be re-stuck because of one reason or another or, I’ve been hurt by the person drawing the blood. In all of these cases, I have high anxiety, or fear, of the blood drawing process. Due to these fears, I always alert the person because I want them to be aware. The reason for the awareness is this… people who are scared can/will do things that aren’t expected.

The nurse told me of an instance where the patient was afraid and when she said, “a little pinch”; the patient jumped… withdrew his arm, pulling the needle out and re-stuck himself in a different area. Now he’s bleeding from where the original stick hit the vein but they aren’t getting any blood. Now he’s yelling at the nurse because he jumped, like it was the nurse’s fault. Because of his fear, the nurse now warns the patient, waits for him to jump and then sticks him. She allowed his fear to show and then proceeds. She’s a smart cookie, in my book.

But, what happens when the object of fear is greater than a needle prick. What if the reason for the tests is what creates the fear? They want to do these tests to prove, or disprove, something. Of course, you never get scheduled for the tests right away. Then you never get the results right away. You have to deal with your fear and faith together while you wait and in this case time can be your enemy. The coin is standing on its side.

How DO we deal with both sides battling? How do we overcome our fear with faith? The answer isn’t a simple one because the battle is within ourselves. We have to work out this battle but we need support to do it. We need support because even when we fast and pray, it’s still there. It’s not just something that we can ignore…

One of the problems that I’ve learned while selling insurance, especially life insurance, is that people don’t want to talk about it. As long as I’m talking about health insurance, or supplements, everything is peachy keen. But, the moment that I speak about protecting your family, in case you don’t make it home from the hospital… things change dramatically. No one wants to talk about death and dying but it’s as natural as child birth. The same thing applies to faith and fear. No one wants to talk about the fear of whatever is going on. We only want to talk about the faith side. But, guess what? I’m dealing with the fear!!! I’m afraid and YOU don’t want to talk about it!!!

Again, how do we fix this? How can we help each other? We need to acknowledge the reality of our fears and support each other as we work to overcome our fears with faith. Allow the person to talk it out. Shutting them down in order to have a prayer meeting is good for YOU but is it good for THEM? It’s like Alcoholics Anonymous, we need to acknowledge what we’re dealing with before we can conquer it. Once, it’s conquered then we ALL con rejoice!!

In closing, please support one another. It builds everyone…

I love you ALL!!!
Stay blessed,
Jackie
